In the current age of globalization, the importance of an understanding of the complex world of the Near and Middle East continues to grow. This development has led to the emergence of considerably expanded demands and tasks, also for oriental studies programs.

The Center for Near and Middle Eastern Studies (CNMS), established in 2006, features a total of seven professorial chairs, a multitude of staff and a broad network of contacts; this set-up enables the Center to offer expertise in a wide variety of subjects, such as Languages, History, Literature, Religion, Archaeology, Politics, Social Sciences and Economics. This combination ensures that the region is made accessible and comprehensible in its full context. The focus comprises the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, as well as Iran and Turkey.

This constellation of resources ensures the availability of the following programs:

• In the field of teaching, courses of study with several majors are being established; these degree programs are quite unique in the German university system and combine historical depth with the full range of modern, contemporary and current themes and approaches. Training in language competence and a breadth of regional knowledge are provided. Equally strong emphasis is placed upon interdisciplinary methodology, intercultural competence and practical experience.
• Research is conducted in the major fields of expertise through interdisciplinary as well as international cooperation.
• Conferences on current topics and interdisciplinary projects facilitate the development of deeper knowledge and understanding.
• The establishment of a multi-dimensional forum for dialog, cooperation and exchange forms the interface between scholars, academic institutions and key figures from the realms of politics, business, media and society.
• The development of further education programs and networks enables the provision of consultancy services for a wide audience.
• A comprehensive library covering all subject areas of the Center is under construction.
