Doing a Doctorate at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Philosophy

As most university faculties and departments in Germany the Faculty of Social Sciences and Philosophy does not offer any PhD study programs. Doctoral students pursue their individual research under the guidance of a supervisor or within a research project (also with a supervisor).

If you are interested in doing your doctoral studies at one of the departments of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Philosophy of Marburg University the first step is finding a suitable supervisor before you apply as a doctoral student:

Contact a professor and consult with him/her about the potential research topic, or send a one-page outline of your interest and ideas as well as your CV to erasmus03@staff.uni-marburg.de (this will be forwarded to a professor working in the respective field of research).

Only after having made contact successfully with a potential supervisor apply as PhD student at Marburg University (thus you prevent sending a full application in vain).

Please note that an understanding with a professor does not mean you are accepted as PhD student! In a second step apply officially as PhD student following the procedure outlined in the PhD-form of our International Relations Office.
