In this course, we will explore the subject of "Germanic religion" in various fields of study from the late nineteenth century up to today, as well as the reconstruction of this "ancestral" religion in contemporary society. We will look at ancient texts that laid the foundation for the general outlines of the Germanenbild that is still employed today; the impact of German nationalism, völkisch ideology, and various scientific discourses on the image of the Germanen; and the significance of concepts such as race, ancestry, tradition, authenticity, and reconstructionism in modern Heathenism (Ásatrú). We will discuss issues of national belonging and exclusion, past and present, and the kinds of forces that are used to define the borders between groups of people, as well as consider through the lens of Germanic religion the ways in which forces of modernity and secularization are productive of new forms of spirituality.

First Weekend (13.-14.01.12):
