1968/69: Ph.D. scholarship from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) for study in the U.S.A.
1973-1975: “habilitation” scholarship from the German Science Foundation (DFG) for field research in Kenya and work at the Survey Research Centre, Berkeley
