TECHNICAL INNOVATION
Best (ecological) practise in agriculture
One of the most peculiar features of Europe is the fact that most of
the biodiversity is affiliated to mixed mosaic landscapes, dominated by
agricultural use. The practise of agriculture therefore holds a key
position for the protection of biodiversity. During the recent past
intensification of agriculture was the prior factor for the loss of
biodiversity. On the other hand abandonment of unprofitable stands will
also result in a loss of biodiversity in the long run.
Agriculture should therefore keep minimum standards to protect nature
and should be willing to offer additional measures where necessary and
appropriate to support nature. Only farmers who keep the minimum
standards should get public subsidies. Recently this is also the
concept of agri-environmental schemes of the European Union and other
European countries (like Switzerland).
In close co-operation with leading agricultural institutions we
developed methods to define and control conservation minimum standards
and additional measures in agriculture
