Relatively simple nervous systems like those of insects are capable to generate complex behaviour such as visual landmark navigation or spatial orientation by means of celestial cues. Behavioural experiments and neuronal recordings indicate that locusts use the polarization pattern of the blue sky to determine their direction of flight. Recent studies suggest that the central complex in the insect brain plays a key role in spatial orientation tasks. By means of neuronal recordings and simultaneous visual stimulation I investigate whether there is other than polarized light input to the central complex of the locust brain.
