Weitere Informationen:

Brilliant scientific publications are distinguished by both the quality of their results and how convincingly these results are presented. Therefore, publications should be clear, logically structured, and elegantly written.

Our workshop “How to Write Publications in the Life and Natural Sciences” primarily covers the formal aspects which need to be considered when writing a scientific publication. Due to time limitations, active writing is only a minor aspect in these classes. Therefore, in spring 2011 the Graduate Center will start an new class of our regularly offered Scientific Writing Lab. Here, we will focus on two aspects of scientific writing:

• In each session Susan Bickel, a teacher from the Language Center of the Philipps-Universität, will deal with one aspect of English language or grammar relevant to the context of scientific writing.
• Scientists from the Life- and Natural Sciences with expert knowledge in writing scientific publications will carry out exercises in scientific writing: three native English speakers, the theoretical physicist Prof. Dr. R. Noack, chemist and Deputy Editor for the Journal ChemPhysChem Dr. G. Heydenrych, and the freelance copy editor J. Rautenberg, experimental physicist Dr. B. M. Fischer, and molecular biologist Dr. U. Kämper. Using your own data, you will work on a short, but complete, publication.

In this way you will be able to apply what you are learning in the Scientific Writing Lab directly towards your next publication or appearance in a scientific context.

Prerequisites

This course is offered exclusively to members of the Graduate Center for Life and Natural Sciences.
To join the Scientific Writing Lab you need to have attended a workshop on “Scientific Writing”. We gladly accept workshops which have not been offered by the Graduate Center.

Registration, regular attendance and active participation are considered binding for one semester. We expect you to work regularly on the given exercises.
Participants with irregular attendance will be replaced by other PhD students interested in joining the Lab.

In addition, every participant must take an English placement test. The results will allow us to design the content of our Writing Lab accordingly.

Registration and registration fee

Please, register by email (gradcln@staff.uni-marburg.de). A registration fee of 50 € per semester must be paid in advance.
