Data Privacy and Security Policy

As outlined in § 13 Paragraph 1 of the Telemedia Act, “The service provider [...] must inform the user at the beginning of user activity about the nature, scope and purpose of the collection and use of personal data [...] in a generally easy to understand form if the user has not already been informed.”

The Philipps-Universität Marburg takes the protection of your personal data seriously. We would like to inform you about when we collect what data as you access our website and how we use the data.

Through the continued development of our websites and the implementation of new technologies, changes to the content of this privacy policy may be necessary. We therefore request you to review this privacy policy from time to time.

The data is processed by the Philipps-Universität in accordance with the data privacy and security policies. The data are not stored or processed in countries outside the scope of European Parliament and Council Directive 95/46/EC from 24 October 1995 for the protection of individuals with regard to the processing of personal data and on the free movement of such data.

Logged Data

When accessing the Web pages of the Philipps-Universität, the following information is stored in the form of access logs:

  1. the client's IP address
  2. the (server) time of access
  3. the HTTP method and the URL of the request
  4. the HTTP status code of the server response
  5. the byte size of the server response
  6. the page of origin (the “referrer”) submitted by the browser
  7. the user agent (the browser's software name)

Visits to our websites are stored in log files for five full days and then deleted by rotation. The IP addresses that are stored in the log files are truncated by the last byte and thereby made anonymous. The assignment of an IP address to an individual is thus not possible, or only possible with a disproportionate amount of time and energy.

In order to repel an ongoing or imminent deliberate attack on the website and to preserve evidence, the Philipps-Universität reserves the right to temporarily disable the anonymization of the IP address in the log files.

Cookies

A so-called cookie is a text fragment placed via a Web browser on the computer of the requestor; the text content is submitted to the website each time the browser accesses the website again.

When accessing our website, a cookie named “I18N_LANGUAGE” is set to a value that represents your preferred language (for example, “de” or “en”) if you access non-German language pages in the CMS. Under very limited conditions, an additional cookie may unintentionally be placed due to a peculiarity of the content management system we use. This cookie, however, will be removed from the query by the CMS server in subsequent queries so that it cannot be used for identification.

Another cookie is used to analyze your visits to our sites through the analysis software “Piwik.” For further information on Piwik, please see “Reports.”

A cookie is also used for the display of advertising banners. For further information on this, please see “Advertising.”

The Philipps-Universität would like to remind you that you can disable the storage of cookies for our site in your web browser. As a result, however, you will not be able to save your language preference settings (see above).

Reports

The website of the Philipps-Universität uses the analysis software Piwik, with which user queries can be analyzed statistically. Piwik places a cookie on your computer to identify you - in anonymous form - as a recurring user of our site. Piwik also gathers information on the browser you are using to access the site, operating system settings (screen resolution), entry and exit pages and the duration of your visit to the site. In addition to the above-described ability to enable or disable cookies via the browser, you can also use an opt out cookie specifically to block the recording of your visits to our website by Piwik.

Links

Our web pages may contain links to websites of other providers. They are normally marked with a () symbol. The Philipps-Universität has no influence on whether these providers also comply with the data privacy and security policies. Please be sure to always check the privacy statements of the providers.

Advertising

On some web pages of the Philipps-Universität there are advertisement banners that have been provided in cooperation with the company VARIFAST GmbH and that use the Adition technologies AG (Adition) ad server.

Cookies are also used here. The cookies in this context are only session cookies and temporary cookies, which serve to statistically track the number of readers (“visitors”) and restrict the numerically set distribution limit of advertising materials. For technical reasons, the IP address of the visitor is also sent to these two companies. Only technical data are recorded, no identifying data. All data, including IP addresses, are used in anonymized form and solely for statistical analysis. Only the transmission of traffic data is temporarily stored via the Adition web server, the recording of which can take place without the express consent of the user.

VARIFAST GmbH and Adition comply with all applicable data protection regulations and policies, in particular with the German Telemedia Act and the Federal Data Protection Act.

By clicking on the link below the collection of anonymous data is stopped. If you select this option, Adition replaces the existing cookie with a new opt-out cookie. If this opt out cookie itself is deleted, Adition can no longer determine whether or not an opt-out has occurred. In this case the opt-out process is to be repeated.
