Online Master Web Development for Linguistics

Type:               Online, No In-Class Tuition

Credits/ECTS:    60

Duration:          2 years

Start:               Winter Term (October) 2011

Fees:               11,500.00 €

This program builds on the experience gained from two previous/current study programs at Philipps University Marburg: the minor subject "Linguistic Engineering", which was offered from 2002 to 2009 as part of the German Magister, and the Master "Linguistics and Web Technology", which started in 2009. It combines the contents of these two degree programs with classes that incorporate the core elements of linguistics and language technology as well as an increased number of practical exercises. The goal of the program is to develop the scientific knowledge of its participants and to complement their work experience.

The program benefits from 10 years of experience with the Virtual Linguistics Campus. All instructional content of the program is available online and is part of different study programs. It has been tested and used by numerous universities in Germany and abroad. Constant updating and peer reviews ensure the quality of the content. Additional print materials (the VLC workbooks) complement the courses. This e-learning concept is - at least for the fields of linguistics and language technology - unrivaled in the world.

This program addresses the changing role of linguistics in information society, in particular through the increasing involvement of language technologies in multimedia systems. The MA broadens graduates' knowledge in such occupational fields that - beyond theoretical linguistic research - are aiming to develop linguistic content using modern technologies.

Content: Acquisition and consolidation of theoretical and practical competencies in the fields of comparative linguistics, language technologies, web development, and project-management; further qualification for active participation in all phases or management of elaborate projects in the fields of language technologies, e-learning, web development, and multimedia, especially in projects that combine elements from several or all of these areas; development of the ability to critically judge the possibilities and limitations of the technologies involved in such projects.
