Celtic Studies are concerned with the languages and literatures of the Celtic-speaking peoples: Irish, Scottish-Gaelic, and Manx, as well as Welsh, Breton, and Cornish. This includes the sparsely attested continental Celtic languages known from Antiquity, such as Gaulish.
Celtic Studies are a crucial part of our understanding of the cultural and linguistic formation, not only of Britain and Ireland, but of Europe as a whole. The Celtic-speaking peoples have greatly influenced the history and languages of Europe, and themes originating in Celtic literature, such as the tales of King Arthur, have shaped the literatures of Europe from the Middle Ages onwards.
Major topics
The Celtic Studies master´s program focuses on Irish and Welsh texts from different periods, including medieval Cornish and Breton options, which are studied in the original languages. The course offers a wide range of subjects, from weekly translation classes to seminars on palaeography, historical linguistics, literary theory, and comparative literature.
Objectives
Apart from deepening their knowledge of Celtic Studies and improving their research skills, graduates will also develop various communicative and social abilities, as the program focuses on the independent development of new ideas and the skills needed for formulating, presenting, and moderating them in both German and English.
Successful graduates of the Celtic Studies master's program have found employment in the fields of adult education, libraries and publishing (print and audio-visual media), cultural mediation and cultural management, as well as in language instruction and public service.
Admission requirements
Required university degree Degree from a subject-relevant bachelor's program in the Linguistic and Cultural Studies or certification of a comparable domestic or foreign qualifying university diploma. Skills in early/medieval Irish, of 12 CP and skills in medieval Cymric, of 12 CP are required.
