What is the contemporary obsession with security doing to moral reasoning and associated categories? Inversely, what moral conceptions legitimize the growing body of security laws, discourses, and practices in late liberalism? How are moral orders produced around claims for security, and which bordering mechanisms prescribe, in moral terms, the exclusion of those perceived as dangerous? Complementing my ethnography of formal and informal policing of the Roma in the peripheries of Rome with archive research and the analysis of laws targeting Roma, I examine the shifts of moralities throughout the last thirty years under the grip of growing perceptions of insecurity and increasing precarization.
