„Symptom and performance validity assessment in adults with ADHD”
Objectives: A comprehensive clinical assessment of adults with ADHD often comprises a neuropsychological assessment of several aspects of attention and executive funtions. However, the assessment is complicated by clear evidence showing that a considerable proportion of adults presenting for clinical evaluation of ADHD may deliberately feign cognitive symptoms and impairments. Thus, it has been recommended that the assessment of symptom and performance validity should be part of any neuropsychological assessment of adults with ADHD.
Methods: This presentation will give an overview of already established tools that have been used in studies on adults with ADHD for the assessment of symptom and performance validity, including self-report rating scales and psychometric performance tests (both embedded validity indicators and stand-alone performance validity tests). Furthermore, this presentation will introduce principles that can be useful for the development of new tools that are specifically designed to detect noncredible symptom report and performance in the clinical evaluation of adult ADHD.
Results: It will be shown why these more traditional tools are not adequately tailored to detect noncredible symptom report and cognitive performance of adults with ADHD. Furthermore, new empirical data will be presented that demonstrate high diagnostic accuracy of new approaches in the detection of noncredible symptom report and cognitive performance in this context.
Conclusions: The potential value of these new tools for clinical use and research purposes will be discussed.
