 3\, the Alternative for Germany (AfD) is now present in all state parliame
 nts and\nmany local councils\, gaining voter support despite continued par
 liamentary marginalisation (Heinze 2022). This\npaper examines how the far
  right affects local democracy in Germany through (1) an ethnographic case
  study of\nAfD campaign events\, and (2) an interview study with professio
 nals working in cultural institutions. While much\nresearch on far-right p
 opulism focuses on demand or supply-side factors\, my research considers p
 opulism as a\nlocally enacted political practice. The paper highlights dis
 ruptive strategies such as parliamentary motions\, hate\nspeech and person
 al threats that aim to intimidate and distract people working in instituti
 ons. These tactics\nundermine democratic institutions and often lead to se
 lf-censorship and disengagement. Furthermore\, an\nethnographic perspectiv
 e shows how the AfD organises these disruptive strategies and engages 'ord
 inary citizens'\nin shaping local institutions. By analysing these practic
 es\, the paper demonstrates how far-right populism\noperates at the local 
 level\, shaping institutional behaviour and threatening democratic discour
 se.
