Constructions for the Expression of Progressivity in the Central Bavarian Dialects of Upper Austria. Results of an Explorative Online Survey

KURZFASSUNG: Die vorliegende Studie untersucht Variation und Wandel von Konstruktionen zum Ausdruck von Progressivität in den mittelbairischen Dialekten Oberösterreichs. Dazu wurde eine apparent-time-Studie mithilfe einer Online-Befragung durchgeführt. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass die Gewährspersonen (GP) zwar ein breites Spektrum syntaktischer Konstruktionen zum Ausdruck von Progressivität als mögliche Varianten akzeptieren, diese aber nicht gleichermaßen häufig verwenden. In der Verwendung dominiert die hinsichtlich Progressivität unterspezifizierte Variante mit finitem Verb (Vfin) im Präsens mit deutlichem Abstand gefolgt von der tun-Periphrase und dem am-Progressiv. Der beim-Progressiv spielt nur eine marginale Rolle. Die dabei sein zu + Infinitiv-Konstruktion wird nicht verwendet. Der apparent-time-Vergleich zeigt insbesondere eine Zunahme des am-Progressivs bei den jüngeren Gewährspersonen, was auf rezenten Sprachwandel hindeutet.

ABSTRACT: The present study investigates variation and change in constructions expressing progressivity in the Central Bavarian dialects of Upper Austria. For this purpose, an apparent-time study was conducted by means of an online survey. Results show that although the participants accept a wide range of syntactic constructions for expressing progressivity, they do not use them with equal frequency. The variant with finite Verb (Vfin) dominates by far in usage, followed by the tun-periphrase and the am-progressive. The constructions beim-progressive and dabei sein zu + infinitive play only a marginal or no role at all. The apparent-time comparison shows an increase of the am-progressive among the younger participants, which indicates on-going language change.
