Tales of Infinity. Endingless Infinitives, Infinitive Prefixes, and Related Features in German Dialects

ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Dieser Beitrag behandelt besondere Formen des Infinitivs: verschiedene kontextbedingte Suffigierungsmöglichkeiten bis hin zur Endungslosigkeit sowie Präfigierung in bestimmten Verbgefügen. Die betroffenen Dialekte liegen vor allem im Norden des Oberdeutschen und im Mitteldeutschen. Es geht erstens um Herkunft und Zusammenhang der präfigierten und suffigierten Infinitive und zweitens um den genauen Status zweier verschiedener Infinitivmarkierungen, n-los und völlig endungslos. Wegen flexivischer und syntaktischer Besonderheiten des völlig endungslosen Typs wird dessen Status als Verb hinterfragt.

ABSTRACT: This study focusses on special forms of the infinitive in certain constructions in Central and Southern German dialects - on the one hand forms without n-ending, on the other prefixed forms. Topics are the origins and possible interdependence of prefixed and suffixless forms and the syntactic status of two different forms of dependent infinitive: n-less and totally without ending. Specific inflexional and syntactic properties of the totally suffixless forms lead to the suggestion that they no longer qualify as verbs.
