Roland Brandl obtained his diploma in animal ecology from the University of Bayreuth (Germany) in 1982 and his Ph.D. from the same university. From 1985 to 1992 he was Assistant Professor at the University of Bayreuth. 1992 he moved to the Department of Ecosystem Modelling at the Centre for Environmental Research Leipzig-Halle (UFZ) and 1996 within the UFZ to the Department of Community Ecology to lead the animal ecology group. Since 2001 he is full Professor for Animal ecology at the University Marburg. His research interests are focussed on the evolution and ecology of biodiversity from small scale experiments to the analysis macroecological patterns. At present he has a number of projects in tropical countries (Tanzania, Madagascar) to study the relationships between biodiversity and land-use. Furthermore in close cooperation with scientists of the National Park Bayerischer Wald he works on the structure and functioning of forest biodiversity across a broad range of taxonomic groups of organisms.
