Research interests

I am interested in the role of generalist predators (mostly spiders, ants and lady birds) in terrestrial ecosystems. Generalist predators interact with organisms at different trophic levels. These interactions include the consumption of prey and non-consumptive effects (e. g. changes in prey traits such as physiology and behaviour). Both types of interactions can expand into lower trophic levels, known as trophic cascades and trait-mediated indirect effects.

The relative importance of consumptive- and non-consumptive effects in non-native predators is of particular interest: novel predators might remain undetected by native prey or native prey might exhibit inappropriate antipredator behaviour. Thus, predator recognition (cue similarity to native predators or phylogenetic relationships) might help to explain and predict invasion success of non-native predators.

Pest control is an important ecosystem service provided by predators. The way landscape composition and landscape configuration affects predator diversity and to which extent predator diversity influences predation rate (risk reduction vs. risk enhancement) will be addressed theoretically as well as in lab and field experiments.
