Investigation of pathomechanisms of chronic inflammatory diseases represent the major focus of the research activities of the Research Division (Head: PD Dr. Reinhard Geßner/PD Dr. Chrysanthi Skevaki) of the Institute of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiochemistry – Molecular Diagnostics (Head: Prof. Dr. Harald Renz). Specifically, chronic inflammatory processes in lung and skin induced by allergic (e.g. allergic asthma) or environmental exposure conditions (e.g. COPD) are of interest. Based on a variety of animal models and human studies the underlying dysregulated immune processes are investigated applying a variety of physiological, immunological, cytological and histological, biochemical and molecular biological methods. Aim of the research activities is a better understanding of the pathological processes involved in the initiation, perpetuation and chronification  of the respective diseases and the development of effective prevention and therapeutic strategies. Activities involve the application of bacterial-derived components for allergy prevention, study of epigenetic regulation processes in disease development, role of nutritional factors in chronic inflammation, interaction of viral infections with chronic disease development and application of DNAzymes as novel therapeutic antisense strategy.
