Writing academic papers in English is increasingly becoming a requirement for most, if not all, scientific disciplines. However, the details and conventions involved with producing academic-level texts can be quite challenging, particularly for those whose native language is not English. This two-day workshop is designed to identify and expand on the topic of scientific writing in English, and to make the writing process more accessible. The workshop will focus on language accuracy, such as syntax, tone and register, punctuation, citation styles, and correcting sentence problems. You will have the opportunity to examine and critique sample academic texts, as well as find and correct common errors in them.
There will be a follow-up session (May 25, 2018, 3 pm–5:30 pm) to give you the opportunity to discuss texts you have written or revised, based on the material covered in the two instructional sessions.

Intended Learning Outcomes

  • You will be familiar with the most common errors made by non-native speakers in written texts, and will have practice correcting them.
  • You have improved knowledge of how to produce grammatically accurate English written in academic register.
  • You will be able to identify and to use different referencing styles.
