Info and Introduction to the Career Paths

Most degree programs offered at universities are not directly related to a specific profession. Nonetheless, the education opens up a wide range of possibilities. In this “forest of opportunities,” the best way to not get lost is to focus on the following career paths.

These career paths are broadly framed so that many, if not all, academic professions can be found there. In one field, a certain profession might have an advantage, but that might be different elsewhere. Some career paths, on the other hand, are considered the “domain” of a particular profession. Even in such a “domain,” professionals from other fields can be successful if they acquire additional knowledge in this field. By focusing on a single profession, a specific field of activity and career path will emerge. By focusing on a person, individualized career opportunities will ultimately emerge.

8 Career Paths

Experience shows that there are eight general career paths where people from a wide variety of disciplines can be found:

  1. Research
  2. Communications
  3. Education
  4. Consulting
  5. Management
  6. Organization and Administration
  7. Service Provision
  8. Additional career paths that cannot be easily classified

Each introduction will explain why certain activities may require specific approaches. In each career path, we’ll explore the relationship between the respective subject area and the career path in order to then describe the individual tasks – sometimes in general terms and sometimes in more detail.

As you read these job descriptions, ask yourself whether you could or would like to do this job. If so, you’ll find further information in each section, including information on industries, employers, and job boards.
