 stract: The combination of genetically encoded tags and their cognate smal
 l-molecule fluorophores is a powerful way to image specific protein target
 s. In the past decade\, a large palette of fluorogenic dyes that emit in t
 he visible range (400-650 nm) has been developed for the self-labeling pro
 tein tags HaloTag and SNAP-tag. Probes with additional functions\, such as
  biosensing\, or that emit at longer wavelengths\, which is essential for 
 in vivo applications\, are still in development. In this lecture\, I will 
 present our efforts to develop chemigenetic probes to sense small biomolec
 ules and reach long wavelengths without compromising on the excellent cont
 rast and specificity of fluorescent proteins.
