25.08.2025 Ta’ziz Partnership: Networks from Bioinformatics to the History of Pharmacy

The Ta’ziz Partnership, funded by the DAAD and the German Federal Foreign Office, strengthens German-Arab cooperation in science and research. Two projects illustrate the diversity of this collaboration:

Life Sciences and Bioinformatics:
The “German Arab Network for Computational Life Science” (GARN-CLS) brings together universities and research institutes from Germany, Egypt, Lebanon, Tunisia, and Morocco. Its goal is to develop new medical solutions through bioinformatics and artificial intelligence. Joint curricula have already been developed, and workshops, symposia, and hackathons have been held, initiating regional research networks. Over 600 students and researchers have participated so far.

Islamic Studies and Archaeology:
The project “Dealing with Material Culture in the Eastern Mediterranean. Between Excavation and Digitization” at Philipps University Marburg collaborates with partners in Egypt and Lebanon. It focuses on material cultures from the Pharaonic era to the Islamic Middle Ages. In addition to archaeological perspectives, the project also addresses questions of digitization—for example, through a digitization lab established in Cairo in 2023. Public lectures, autumn schools, and planned master’s programs sustainably strengthen the exchange.

Both projects demonstrate how scientific cooperation not only enriches research but also builds long-term networks between Germany and the MENA region. For more information, click here
