09.05.2026 Fellowship Prof. Jeffrey Klenotic

The Digital Cinema Hub (DiCi-Hub) team is pleased to welcome Prof. Jeffrey Klenotic as our fifth visiting fellow.

Prof. Jeffrey Klenotic is a Professor of Communication Arts at the University of New Hampshire, where he has mapped the history of film exhibition in the state including recovering the work of women exhibitors in the 1910s and 1920s. In 2003, he helped found the History of Moviegoing, Exhibition and Reception (HoMER) research network, and developed the project Mapping Movies, a desktop spatial humanities project that was among the first to use Geographic Information System (GIS) tools for researching and visualizing the social and spatial history of moviegoing.

During his fellowship, Klenotic will contribute to the DiCi-Hub’s research activities on digital infrastructures and cultural data with a workshop on May 21 and seminar session for students in media studies on May 20.

Join us on May 19, 2026, from 4 to 6 pm, Seminargebäude, Pilgrimstein 12, Raum 013, for his public afternoon lecture:

“Space, Place and Mapping in Digital and Media History”
This lecture draws on geographic theory to examine concepts of space and place and how they can enrich our understanding of media history in the context of digitization. It suggests some ways digital archives and geospatial mapping tools can be combined to facilitate multi-layered and multi-perspectival modes of digital historiography that enable exploration and interaction with geodata at macro and micro scales of visualization and analysis. The lecture uses examples from his own work using GIS to explore the spatial and social history of cinema in the U.S., as well as examples from scholars working in other modes and areas of inquiry, to illustrate some prospects and challenges for geospatial mappings of space and place in media history.
