Therapeutic Study
It is hypothesized that a personalized approach in terms of diagnostic procedures and treatment compared to usual clinical care improves the quality of life in patients with COPD. Up to now, diagnosis of COPD relies predominantly on lung function measurements, previous exacerbations, and symptoms, guiding different treatment strategies.
Our multicenter prospective, randomized controlled clinical study on Personalized Medicine of COPD (PerMed-COPD Study) aims at evaluating dedicated biomarkers (compare research project Molecular Biomarkers), as well as using a prototype clinical decision-making tool (compare research project CDSS), in terms of an individualized approach. If this hypothesis is confirmed, findings could be generalized to the majority of COPD patients. In this manner, patients are expected to benefit from this individualized approach in particular with regard to symptom reduction of the disease. We will include 1,374 patients in our study who show the key inclusion criteria of being at an age of 40 years or older, diagnosis of COPD, and availability for study visits. The patients are randomized to usual clinical care vs. the personalized approach over a period of 12 months, after which follow-up tests are performed. Patients are excluded who had significant lung surgery in the past, moderate or severe exacerbation in the four weeks prior to entry, currently diagnosed lung tumor, and physical or cognitive impairment resulting in an inability to understand the intention and to participate in the study.
