As the fiftieth anniversary of 1968 approaches, this lecture reassesses the global dimension of what has come to be known as the almost mythical decade of “the sixties”. While previous scholarship has largely concentrated on the US and Western Europe, we will explore the decade from the vantage points of Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Eastern Europe. Focusing on the various causes, themes, forms, and legacies of that tumultuous period in each locale, we will examine transnational spaces and international entanglements, as well as the impact of local forces. This perspective will not only test the validity of the “global sixties” paradigm. It will also help us gain a deeper appreciation of the diversity of historical experience and subsequent politics of memory on a global scale.
