Advanced Programming in R

Do you already work with R occasionally to: Perform manipulation and follow-up processing of your data? Conduct statistical analysis beyond the scope of basic spreadsheet applications? Visualize the results derived therefrom in preparation for meaningful publications? If the answer to at least one of these questions is “yes” and you want to make your R workflows more efficient, then this advanced R course could be for you!

Intended Learning Outcomes:

  • You will have an overview of various methods to bring (big) data into shape (e.g., by using the popular ‚dplyr‘ package). This knowledge will enable you to create publication-quality graphics from only a few lines of code (presentation and practical exercises).
  • You will be capable of employing effective loop structures beyond the scope of regular – and very slow! – for-loop constructs including the parallelization of computationally expensive tasks and utilizing the extensive connectivity between R and C++ (practical exercises).
  • You will be able to boost the performance of your custom functions by employing the principle of functional programming in meaningful ways (practical exercises).
  • In addition, you will have improved organizational structure and version control habits by using RStudio projects along with fully implemented GitHub functionality (trainer input and practical exercises).

Requirements:
Basic knowledge in the usage of R is required. You are further requested to bring a laptop with the latest versions of R and RStudio installed for use in the workshop. Rtools needs to be present and working on Windows, and the Xcode package should be installed on macOS. Also be sure to sign up at GitHub and install Git on your machine. If you have technical questions, the instructor will be happy to provide installation assistance.
