Goals of M3B

M3B is dedicated to advancing research and knowledge on the interactions between global climate change, land-use dynamics, and ecosystems and their biodiversity. It serves as a collaborative platform that brings together expertise from biology, geography, and informatics to coordinate and conduct interdisciplinary research projects. As the name indicates, one of M3Bs focal research areas is the development and implementation of new biodiversity and ecosystem process monitoring approaches. A second focus is to model biodiversity and ecosystem processes both in space and time, as well as functionally.

In addition to its research activities, the center actively fosters national and international partnerships in both research and teaching, strengthening academic exchange and cooperation. A key priority is the promotion of early-career researchers, supporting the next generation of scientists through targeted development opportunities.

M3B consolidates and operates shared scientific infrastructures and aims to establish new core facilities that provide services to the research community. It contributes to academic teaching by offering both personnel and content-related support to study programs, while also designing and delivering new interdisciplinary education initiatives.

Furthermore, the center develops materials, guidelines, and standards to support scientific and practical work in the field. Through its outreach activities, it engages with policymakers and society at large, providing evidence-based advice and contributing to informed decision-making on climate and land-use challenges.
