Education

  • School-leaving examination and certificate (“Abitur”) 1966 in Albstadt-Ebingen.
  • Trained as electronic engineer at the Technical University in Karlsruhe. Obtained a Degree
in „Electrobiology” at the Institute of „Biomedical Engineering and Biological Cybernetics“ (1968-1974).

Research

To supervise and perform a broad range of neurophysiological studies with different methods and techniques:

  • electrophysiological experiments in the peripheral and central nervous system: single fiber recordings by microdissection of peripheral nerves and microelectrode recordings in mammalian brain slices.
  • conceptional engineering work for the construction of electrophysiological stimulation and recording devices.
  • developing software tools for the analysis of neuronal impulse patterns and nonlinear system behavior.
  • theory construction and computer modeling of neuronal information processing (signal encoding and neuromodulation) and of complex dynamics in autonomous functions and psychiatric diseases.

Teaching

  • Teaching physiology in lectures, seminars and practical courses for medical, human-biology and psychology students and supervision of diploma and doctoral students.
  • developing and programming of teaching software for Physiology, Pharmacology and Biophysics.

Others

  • Reviewer for international journals (e.g. J. Neurophysiol., Nature).
  • International reviewer of grant applications (e.g. for ESF, NIH).
  • Co-organizer and member of the scientific committee of international conferences, e.g. co-organizer (with Reinhard Eckhorn) of the upcoming 6th Neural Coding Meeting in Marburg (August 2005).
  • Member of the Scientific Committee of the International University in Saratov (Russia).
  • German representative of EURCA, the European Research Center for Alternatives in Higher Education.
  • Member of the German Physiological Society (DPG), the German and the American Societies for Neuroscience (NWG and SFN), and Fellow of the American Physical Society (APS).
  • Developer and Editor of teaching software including the “Virtual Physiology” series (Georg Thieme Publ., Stuttgart) and the cLabs series (BM&T, Heidelberg/Marburg).

Awards and Honors

  • Winner of several awards with the teaching software MacFrog/SimNerv: German-Austrian University Software Award 1993 for a) the best multimedia instructive software and b) the best teaching software in the disciplines biology and medicine.
  • International MacWelt award 1993 for trendsetting multimedia software for MacFrog/SimNerv.
