Video activism, which uses cameras as a tool for social justice, has undergone varoius transformations while preserving its core purpose: documentinh injustices, raising awareness of urgent social issues, and advocating for rights across a range of themes. While its often praised for its impact, it has also been critized for potentially reinforcing audience indifference due to overexposure. Focusing on key historical moments - such as the documentation of racist police violence in the 1990s and the visula mobilization in grassroots movements of the 2010s including the "Arab Spring", the Gezi Park protests in Turkey, and mobilizations in Spain and the United States - students will analyze the development of video activism and its shifting aesthetics and strategies. The course will also discuss the challenges the genre faces today.SoSe 2025 History of Kurdish Documentary Cinema
