Solar energy is set to become the most important source of energy for cost-effective climate protection. This lecture first discusses global scenarios for the expansion of photovoltaics and then uses the example of Germany to show which strategies can be used to integrate a large number of fluctuating generators into the electricity grid. However, the expansion of photovoltaics on a multi-TW scale also poses challenges. In particular, new types of solar cells such as tandem solar cells and perovskite solar cells will help to reduce resource consumption and energy consumption in production in the future, but in turn have their own challenges, which are currently the subject of research.
