At Marburg, we consider Arabic Studies as a cultural and literary discipline with a focus on modernity. However, central areas of Arabic classics as well as pre and early Islam are included in teaching and research as important cultural and historical prerequisites for modern developments.

On the one hand, Arabic literature and culture are considered as part of current global exchange processes and, on the other hand, as the legacy of centuries-old traditions. The subject of Arabic Studies focuses on classical and modern historical and literary writings and developments. Modern media such as newspapers, the internet and film are also used in questions posed by literary and cultural studies and methodology.
