Doctoral degree

We offer the opportunity to acquire the degree of a Doctor of Philosophy (Dr. phil) in the field of Arabic Studies as outlined in the PhD regulations (so far available in German only) set by the Faculty for Foreign Languages and Literatures.

The personal supervision and guidance that hitherto characterised the process of writing a doctoral thesis in Germany will continue to be of major importance. We regard a good working knowledge of German as indispensable for fruitful academic discussion and interdisciplinary exchange of ideas, although it is in principle possible to submit a thesis in English.

In order to decide whether a supervision by Prof. Dr. Friederike Pannewick is possible, the following documents are needed:

• detailed description of the planned PhD project, including the research problem and question
• description of the methodological approach as well as the theoretical embedding      
• structure and schedule      
• curriculum vitae, including list of teaching positions and publications (if applicable)      
• short presentation of the connections of your PhD project with the research foci of the department      
• proof of language proficiency in Arabic      
• Additionally, the readiness to regularly attend the interdisciplinary PhD / Institute colloquium of the Center for Near and Middle Eastern Studies.
