The Floor Mosaics in Stazione Ostienze in Rome

Imperium, Romanità and the message of Mussolini

Ostiense railway station is one of the less known fascist monuments in Rome. They are walked over by thousand of travellers every day, but go virtually unnoticed. The station is frequently mentioned in connection with Hitler’s visit to Rome in May 1938, but the mosaics are actually dated to 1940 and have to be read in the light of the events of these days. Their message is the destiny of Italy to rule the world, a message that was very popular in art commissioned by the regime in the late thirties. The mosaics from this train station show that events from Rome’s past are crucial in propagating this message. As such they an adequate illustration to the fascist ideal of Romanità
