26.05.2026 June 2026: The LOEWE GenDem Research Project welcomes its first international guests

In June 2026, we will welcome researchers Tutku Ayhan, Magdalena Grabowska, and Nadje Al-Ali for joint workshops and lectures

  • Tutku Ayhan, a postdoctoral researcher in the field of international security at the Institut Barcelona d’Estudis Internationals (IBEI), and Magdalena Grabowska of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw will visit the GenDem project from June 8 to 21, 2026, as part of a short-term research mission co-funded by the EU COST Action CA 23149 “Antigender Politics,” to visit the GenDem project. Both will participate in an on-site workshop on “Anti-Feminism in Times of Crisis” (University of Marburg, June 11–12, 2026) to identify the different understandings of and narratives surrounding crises among various actors and to analyze their gender-specific socioeconomic foundations as well as the purposes they serve in the context of anti-feminist mobilizations. This collaboration will result in a joint blog post for the ECPR’s political science blog “The Loop: Gendering Democracy” in the fall of 2026.

  • From February 21 to 26, 2026, Prof. Nadje Al-Ali, Robert Family Professor of International Studies and Professor of Anthropology and Middle Eastern Studies at Brown University in Pennsylvania, USA, will also be visiting Marburg as a visiting scholar for the GenDem project. Prof. Nadje Al-Ali will participate in an on-site workshop on the topic “Critique of Western Exceptionalism” (June 24, 26, University of Marburg).

All guests will also give individual public lectures as part of the lecture series organized by the GenDem project, titled “Gendered Nations: Antifeminism and Nationalism, 1900–2026” (Thursday, 6:00–8:00 p.m. CET; online participation is available upon registration at ):

  • 11.6.26: Magdalena Grabowska: „Reproducing Life, Reproducing the Nation: Social Reproduction Abortion and Nationalism in Poland“;

  • 18.6.26: Tutku Ayhan: „Anti-Gender Politics as Authoritarian Governance: The Case of Türkiye“;

  • 25.6.26: Nadje Al-Ali: "The Entanglement of Feminism & Nationalism in the MENA-Region".
