Red-White-Red Drag Panic(s): Queer Border Figures as Culmination Points of Anti-Feminist and Homo(Trans)nationalist Mobilizations: The Case of Austria

With a focus on Austria, the GenDem subproject examines the significance and role of so-called “queer border figures” – particularly the figure of the drag queen – in anti-feminist mobilizations as well as in gender- and sexuality-political (interpretive) struggles over national self-conceptions and geopolitical border-drawings. The project examines how gender, sexuality, nation, and “Western” modernity are negotiated in “moral panics.” The focus is on anti-feminist argumentation strategies, transnational networks, and geopolitical boundary-drawings between homotolerance, homonationalism, and “anti-gender” politics.
