South Caucasus: State-Sponsored Anti-Feminism in the Name of the Nation? Azerbaijan, Georgia and Armenia

Ph.D. project at Philipps University of Marburg

Project Lead: Prof. Dr. Ursula Birsl, Prof. Dr. Edith Franke

The GenDem subproject focuses on Azerbaijan as a case study of potential state-sponsored anti-feminism in the post-Soviet South Caucasus. Through a comparative analysis with Armenia and Georgia, the project examines how religion, nation-building, and authoritarian rule are intertwined with regressive gender policies. The focus is on the question of whether feminist and emancipatory movements are rejected as a “Western project” in order to secure authoritarian stability and suppress democratization processes.
