Seminar: Selected and Advanced Topics in Distributed Systems
First meeting is Tueday, October 13, 2026, 16:00, Seminar room XV, Gebäude H|04
Description
Modern computing systems, such as data management and analytic systems, have evolved to be increasingly complex in scale and requirements. They comprise multiple independent processes and are executed highly distributed on a wide range of geographically dispersed computing resources like private and public cloud-edge data centers or local computing devices. Distributed system concepts aim to support scalability and availability of IT systems without requiring users to understand how IT applications are distributed over physical or virtual resources. The goal of the seminar is to familiarize participants with (1) important principles to build distributed systems, (2) current forms of modern adaptive distributed systems, (3) current research problems in the field of distributed systems, and (4) exemplary implementations of distributed systems. The topics of the seminar include, but are not limited to
- Dealing with time in distributed computations
- Failures and consistency
- Synchronization and resource allocation
- Communication patterns and coordination services for distributed computations
- Monitoring and analysis of distributed computations
- Methods and architectures for autoscaling and self-self-organization
- Distributed trust and privacy
- Performance acceleration
- Energy-efficient distributed computing
- Distributed services and applications
Organisation
Participants will lead presentations on research papers on a particular topic, providing both an on-site presentation and a later video recording based on feedback. A complementary written report will allow for self-contained understanding of the presented material. Last but not least, participants are expected to actively participate in the discussion sessions.
