Sync & Share services – next.hessenbox, Hessenbox & Nextcloud

Researchers, students and university personnel need access to data protection-compliant and future-proof cloud services for the storage, synchronisation, exchange of and collaboration on files, be it for their own work, within project teams, working groups or with external partners. To fulfil this demand, Hessian universities offer different Sync & Share services:
next.hessenbox is operated by the University of Kassel as a central service (based on Nextcloud) and is available to several Hessian universities under a cooperation agreement. It enables file uploads, synchronisation across different devices, joint editing and sharing for internal and external persons. next.hessenbox meets significantly higher requirements for data protection and data sovereignty than many commercial services, and can therefore be used to share (anonymized) research data with other researchers. next.hessenbox is the successor of the Hessenbox service, which reaches its end of service in December 2025. Certain universities also offer their own Nextcloud instances.
