Opportunities for Doctoral Candidates at the University of Marburg

The university provides doctoral candidates with many contact points for basic questions about their doctorate, networking, and the development of further hard and soft skills.

MARA

The MArburg University Research Academy (MARA)  is a university-wide and interdisciplinary institution of the Philipps University of Marburg with many resources for doctoral candidates and young scientists.

MARA accompanies and supports researchers, starting from the decision to pursue a doctorate, all the way to their establishment in both academic and non-academic contexts. The program considers the different paths in academic careers and professional development and promotes peer exchange among researchers across disciplinary boundaries and status groups. The institution directly involves young researchers in program development and committee work, thus responding promptly to current needs. The offerings are open to all doctoral candidates and postdocs at Philipps University Marburg. Young researchers from collaborative projects are also welcome to participate in the events.

MARA is made up of four main areas: events, finances, advising and networking.

The close cooperation with the Referat Wissenschaftlicher Nachwuchs as well as the the International Office and Family Services and its Welcome Centre for international researchers also enables targeted support for young researchers in their individual life situations.

HERMES

The  HERMES Data Competence Center – Humanities Education in Research, Data, and Methods – funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and coordinated by the MCDCI, addresses the need for training, continuing education, and practice-oriented consulting in the field of data literacy in humanities and cultural studies research and teaching, as well as in GLAM (galleries, libraries, archives, and museums) institutions. HERMES establishes spaces for learning, research, and networking where data literacy in the humanities and cultural studies is taught, further developed, and critically reflected upon.

HERMES enables doctoral candidates in the humanities and cultural studies who work with digital data to engage in professional exchange and further training in digital methods within the framework of the HERMES doctoral network, which supports their doctoral studies from the beginning to the dissertation defense.
