M.A. Cultural Data Studies

Welcome to the webpage of our interdisciplinary Master’s degree!

The degree program “M.A. Cultural Data Studies” was created in the winter semester 2021/22 at the Philipps University Marburg and is for those who have completed a Bachelor’s Degree in the humanities or social sciences and who are interested in the field of digitalization.

The degree program was created in response to the growing demand for digital methodological skills that can be identified in all scientific disciplines, as well as in response to the ever-advancing digital transformation of society and the need for critical reflection on these processes. The core of this degree program involves working with cultural data in the broadest sense - from digitized cultural heritage objects to interactions on Social Media platforms.

In this degree program, the students learn content-based, methodological and theoretical skills in the fields of humanities and social sciences. Building upon the disciplinary knowledge gained from their Bachelor’s degrees, the students further develop their abilities working with digital data and learn research methods of the digital world. The program focuses especially on research practice. The students are introduced to the work of concrete research projects and scientific institutions starting in their first semester.
