Comprised of 12 professors at two inner city locations, the archaeological disciplines and the historical sciences constitute one of the most compact departments at the Philipps University of Marburg. The department incorporates the research and teaching of historical themes in epochal periods, from classical antiquity to the present, as well as from areas of prehistoric, classical and early medieval to underwater archaeology.

A balanced emphasis between practical and research orientation is furthered by the shared personnel of the department and the Hessian State Archives (Marburg) and Hessian State Office for Regional History. The long-standing and acclaimed department’s profile is rounded out by hosting valuable archaeological, numismatical and diplomatic collections.

The department is also home to a number of subprojects in the Collaborative Research Centre/Transregio 138 “Dynamics of Security. Types of Securitization from a Historical Perspective”.
