What do antifeminism, democracy, and authoritarian tendencies have in common? This question is the focus of the new LOEWE research cluster “Entanglement of Anti-Feminisms: Gender, Democracy, and Authoritarianism in ‘Entangled Modernities’” (GenDem for short), led by Prof. Dr. Annette Henniger, professor for Political Science at Philipps University of Marburg.

GenDem is a shared research cluster of the Philipps University of Marburg, the Justus Liebig University Giessen and the Herder Institute for Historical Research on East Central Europe in Marburg.

Through six thematic subprojects, the research cluster is conducting the first comparative study of anti-feminist mobilizations in various countries of Eastern and Western Europe as well as in the South Caucasus. The goal is to systematically identify the conditions under which these movements emerge, how they are transnationally interconnected, and what influence they exert on processes of democratization or authoritarianism.
