SoSe 2026 Conflict in Graphic Novels from Middle East and Beyond (in English)
This course explores how graphic novels and comic books from the Middle East and beyond narrate conflict, memory, and identity through visual-literary and autobiographical storytelling tools of the medium. Through close readings of both renowned and lesser-known works, students examine how this artistic medium contributes to discussions in conflict studies, transitional justice, and cultural memory.SoSe 2026 Seeing Justice: Confllict and Social Transformation in Cinema from Turkey (in English)
This course examines how cinema in and from Turkey engages with themes of conflict, justice, and social transformation within the context of the country’s screen politics. Through film analysis and critical readings, students explore how cinematic form responds to issues such as nation-building, Kurdish politics, gender, migration, religion, diaspora, and minority rights.WiSe 2025/26 A Practical Guide to Contemporary Video Activism (in English)
Focusing on key historical moments - such as the documentation of racist police violence in the 1990s and the visual mobilization in grassroots movements of the 2010s including the "Arab Spring", the Gezi Park protests in Turkey; students analyze the development of video activism and its shifting aesthetics, strategies and challenges that genre faces. Kurdish cinema is a national cinema that emerged in a transnational space. Developing relatively late (over a century after the invention of cinema) and with recurring themes such as memory, space, borders and language; Kurdish cinema offers a unique lens for exploring various sociopolitical and cultural issues, as well as discussions on documentary film theory.WiSe 2024/25 A Practical Guide to Video Activism (in English)
The objective of this course is to present the basics of filming, sound recording, and editing for the purpose of creating short videos that fall under the category of video activism.
