Poppe, The translation of morphological descriptions in Gruffydd Robert’s sixteenth-century Welsh Grammar

The paper analyses the descriptions of the word classes and their immediate accidents in Gruffydd Robert’s grammar of Welsh, published in a series of booklets between 1567 and 1594 in Milan. A number of significant correspondences with two contemporary authorised grammars of Latin published in England are identified, and these are further discussed in terms of metaphorical and concrete translations of grammatical categories of Latin into Welsh.

Vorträge im September 2020

Elena Parina hielt am 17.9.2020 in Wolfenbüttel im Rahmen der 2. Jahreskonferenz des Schwerpunktprogramms 2130 „Übersetzungspolitiken / Translation Policy and the Politics of Translation“ einen Vortrag zum Thema „The ʻGlamorgan school of translationʼ: a no-politics phenomenon?“. In dem Vortrag besprach sie den wissenschaftspolitischen Hintergrund für die Herausbildung des in der walisischen Literaturgeschichtsschreibung eingeführten Konzepts einer konfessionell ausgerichteten ‚Glamorgan school‘ und problematisierte es dann durch eine genaue Analyse der konfessionellen Affiliationen der ihr zugeschriebenen Texte.

Elena Parina presented a paper on ‘The ʻGlamorgan school of translationʼ: a no-politics phenomenon?’ to the Second Annual Conference ‘Translation Policy and the Politics of Translation / Übersetzungspolitiken‘ of the DFG Priority Program 2130 held in Wolfenbüttel from September 16th to 18th. In her paper she analysed the intellectual and historical background of the concept of a ‘Glamorgan school’ defined in terms of confessional loyalties, as it has become accepted in Welsh literary history, and then problematised it with fine-grained analyses of the confessional affiliations of texts conventionally attributed to it.

Erich Poppe gave a paper entitled ‘John Bunyans Pilgrim’s Progress in Wales: Taith neu Siwrnai y Pererin (London 1688) und Taith y Pererin (Mwythig/Shrewsbury 1699)’ at the conference ‘Engelländisch to and fro! Deutsch-englische Übersetzungskultur der Frühen Neuzeit’ held in Augsburg from September 24th to 26th. Together with Professor Heinz Eickmans’ paper ‘John Bunyans Christen Reise von London über Amsterdam nach Hamburg: Niederländisch als Intermediärsprache für Übersetzungen aus dem Englischen in der Frühen Neuzeit’ it formed a thematic block on translations of John Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress which are conceptually connected by obfuscating the source text for readers: the German version is a ‘second-hand translation’ of the Dutch translation, the Welsh translators interfere with the English source-text without signposting this.

SSP-Beiträge zum Workshop ‘Creating annotated corpora for historical languages’

  • Elena Parina: ‘Annotated data from the 14th and 16th century: General remarks and a test case in Welsh stylistics’
  • Raphael Sackmann: ‘Agents of verbal nouns in Early Modern Welsh: Evidence from prepositional phrases in Perl mewn adfyd’
  • Erich Poppe: ‘The formation of coordinated subordinate clauses in Early Modern Welsh: Some data from the 1588 and later Bibles’

SSP-contributions to the workshop ‘Creating annotated corpora for historical languages’

The members of the project ‘The Welsh Contribution to the Early Modern Cultures of Translation: Sixteenth-Century Strategies of Translating into Welsh’ attended the workshop ‘Creating annotated corpora for historical languages’ at the University of Cambridge and presented papers on results of their research.

The workshop was organised by Dr Marieke Meelen and Dr David Willis, both important cooperation partners of the Marburg project. Both are principal investigators of the project ‘Parsed Historical Corpus of the Welsh Language’, into which the Welsh translations of the sixteenth century which are analysed in the Marburg project, will be integrated after their syntactic annotations, as will be the data of the previous Marburg project ‘Translations as Language Contact Phenomena – Studies in lexical, grammatical, and stylistic interferences in Middle Welsh religious texts’ (Principal investigator Prof E Poppe, research assistant Dr E Parina).

The workshop offered the welcome and productive opportunity to discuss details of the annotation of texts with the other participants, leading researchers engaged in the creation of corpora for the analysis of historical syntax.

 Papers presented:

  • Elena Parina: ‘Annotated data from the 14th and 16th century: General remarks and a test case in Welsh stylistics’
  • Raphael Sackmann: ‘Agents of verbal nouns in Early Modern Welsh: Evidence from prepositional phrases in Perl mewn adfyd’
  • Erich Poppe: ‘The formation of coordinated subordinate clauses in Early Modern Welsh: Some data from the 1588 and later Bibles’

24.–25. September, 2019, Birmingham (UK): ‘Crossing Borders in the Insular Middle Ages’

Er enthält Beiträge von Elena Parina (‚Medical Texts in Welsh Translations: Y Pedwar Gwlybwr and Rhinweddau Bwydydd‘) und Erich Poppe (‚Gabháltais Sherluis Mhóir in its Irish and Insular Contexts‘).

A symposium was held in Birmingham to conclude the pilot phase of the project 'Crossing Borders in the Insular Middle Ages' (funded by an alumni network grant, awarded by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, 2016-19), organised by Dr Victoria Flood (University of Birmingham) and Dr Aisling Byrne (University of Reading). The pilot project developed a model for the digital presentation of the inter-cultural transmission of texts. In addition, forms of interdisciplinary cooperation in the research of translations which are transmitted in more than one language, were successfully trialed. The network group, of which Prof Erich Poppe is a member of the advisory board, is now considerating new cooperation possibilities and further extensions.

As an active member of the network group, Dr. Elena Parina, co-leader of the SPP project ‘Translating into Welsh’ presented results of her research on the varying approaches of the translators as they can be detected in the Welsh versions of the Transitus Mariae of the 14th and 16th centuries in her paper ‚Welsh Texts about the Assumption of the Virgin Mary from the Long Middle Ages and their Insular Context‘.

The symposium also was the venue for the launch for the project’s website, which details the attestation and transmission of some medieval key texts. Information on the texts Transitus Mariae and Elucidarium was provided by Elena Parina (partly in cooperation with Dr. Dale Kedwards, Háskóli Íslands).

The symposium also saw the launch of the volume Crossing Borders in the Insular Middle Ages, edited by Aisling Byrne and Victoria Flood (Turnhout: Brepols, 2019), which collects the papers from the preparative symposium of the project that took place in Marburg 2015. It contains contributions by Elena Parina (Medical Texts in Welsh Translations: Y Pedwar Gwlybwr and Rhinweddau Bwydydd) and Erich Poppe (Gabháltais Sherluis Mhóir in its Irish and Insular Contexts).

22.–26.07 / July 22–26, 2019, Bangor (Wales): 16th International Congress of Celtic Studies

  • Elena Parina: ‚The position of translations within the Welsh literary polysystem of the 16thcentury‘, im Rahmen der Sektion ‚The Politics of Welsh Translation: Three Periods / Cyfieithu‘r Gymraeg a Gwleidyddiaeth: Tri Chyfnod‘.
  • Erich Poppe: ‚Beyond ‘word-for-word’: Gruffudd Bola (fl. 1270/80) and Robert Gwyn (c. 1540/50 –1592/1604) on translating into Welsh‘.
  • Raphael Sackmann: ‚Translational strategies in Perl mewn adfyd (1595)‘.

Bericht: Elena Parina und Erich Poppe

The members of the research team of the project ‚The Welsh Contribution tothe Early Modern Cultures of Translation: Sixteenth-Century Strategies of Translating into Welsh‘ presented results of their work at the 16th International Congress of Celtic Studies and discussed their research with colleagues attending the conference.

Dr Elena Parina organised a special and well-attended session ‚The Politics of Welsh Translation: Three Periods / Cyfieithu‘r Gymraeg a Gwleidyddiaeth: Tri Chyfnod‘ together with two colleagues from Wales, Dr Marion Löffler (Cardiff) and Prof Angharad Price (Bangor). Both research translations into Welsh over the centuries, and the latter has also worked on the counter-reformation in Italy, and they cooperate with our project in terms of collaboration or advice. The session set out to discuss, from the perspectives of a linguist, a cultural historian and a literary scholar/author/translator, ways of researching translation and translations, their political and social reverberations and their literary implications from the sixteenth to the beginning of the twenty-first century. Their foci were the Welsh language and its relation to Welsh society and the wider world, as well as the value of researching translations in modern Celtic studies. A further new research collaboration was initiated with Dr Paul Bryant-Quinn (University of Exeter), who invited Prof Erich Poppe to contribute to a projected volume on the recusant priest and scholar Gruffydd Robert (c. 1527 –1698)—active in Italy since c. 1563—the chapter on his grammar of Welsh.

 Papers presented:

  • Elena Parina: ‚The position of translations within the Welsh literary polysystem of the 16thcentury‘, as part of the session ‚The Politics of Welsh Translation: Three Periods / Cyfieithu‘r Gymraeg a Gwleidyddiaeth: Tri Chyfnod‘.
  • Erich Poppe: ‚Beyond ‘word-for-word’: Gruffudd Bola (fl. 1270/80) and Robert Gwyn (c. 1540/50 –1592/1604) on translating into Welsh‘.
