Kraehling Lab

Virus replication relies on the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), the central site of protein and lipid synthesis. Viral infection can lead to accumulation of proteins in the ER, which can trigger ER stress and thus activation of the unfolded protein response (UPR). The Krähling lab investigates the regulation of the UPR by virus infections and its impact on viral proliferation. The work focuses on filoviruses and coronaviruses. An overarching goal is to identify starting points for new antiviral therapies through a detailed characterization of essential virus-host interactions.
Furthermore, we are involved in applied research. We develop and qualify immunological methods for the detection of virus-specific antibodies and we are involved in the development and characterization of vaccines against highly pathogenic viruses.
