Qualification program of the Integrated Graduate School

The Integrated Graduate School's qualification program supports doctoral candidates through continuous supervision of their research, targeted offers for science-related further qualification as well as freedom for their own initiatives. The program of the Integrated Graduate School provides a central basis for joint work, interdisciplinary exchange and discussion of research projects among each other.

  • Interdisciplinary Colloquium on Historical Security Research

The core of the qualification program is the Interdisciplinary Colloquium on Historical Security Research, which takes place three times per semester in the form of 3-hour block events during the first 3 years of the PhD. This way, a close integration of the individual dissertation projects into the overarching research context is ensured and a cross-project and cross-disciplinary exchange of doctoral students is supported.

  • Summerschool of the Integrated Graduate School

An important element of the qualification program is the International Graduate School's Summer School, which lasts several days and takes place during the first year of the PhD. It is primarily dedicated to the theoretical and conceptual foundations of the Collaborative Research Center and historical security research, respectively, accompanied by impulse lectures, intensive discussions and numerous opportunities for exchange with the members of the Collaborative Research Center.

  • Masterclasses

A central part of the obligatory IGS program are the Master Classes, which are organisted by the PhD candidates themselves in the course of the first 3 years of their PhD. Master classes offer PhD candidates the opportunity to discuss conceptual and theoretical contents of the research projects with internationally renowned experts from the respective fields.

  • International Summerschool or conference

The participation in a thematically relevant international summer school or international conference in the course of the 3 first years completes the obligatory part of the qualification program of the Integrated Graduate School.

  • Development of science-related competences and additional qualifications

Based on the perspective and individual needs of the career pursued after the doctorate, the doctoral candidates are required to take an elective element within their 4-years activity at the Collaborative Research Center that serves the development of science-related competences and additional qualifications. The Integrated Graduate School supports the doctoral candidates in the choice of the elective element with the aim of obtaining and making use of the most suitable offers for individual career planning, the acquisition of competencies and profile building in close cooperation with the existing graduate centers and cooperation partners of the Collaborative Research Center in Marburg and Giessen.
