VideoSearch@DRA (DFG)

Image and Scene Search in Historical Collections of DDR Television Recordings in the German Broadcasting Archive (DRA) by Automatic Content-based Video Analysis

The German Broadcasting Archive (Deutsches Rundfunkarchiv, DRA) at Potsdam-Babelsberg is the only documentation center in Germany that stores, analyzes and makes available the cultural heritage of radio and television of the former German Democratic Republic (GDR) in its entirety. It thus forms the singular point of contact for scientific research in this area.

The goal of the project is to digitize selected collections of television broadcasts and to allow users to search within the image and scene content based on innovative methods of content-based image and video analysis. The selected collections consist of the GDR TV news program „Aktuelle Kamera", television series of the „GDR journalism“ and 220 hours of GDR TV movie recordings. The development of automatic methods for content analysis of videos is aimed at

  • automatically analyzing video content in a very fine temporal granularity,
  • making the selected video material searchable on the basis of image/scene content of individual camera settings,
  • allowing users to perform image-based similarity search in the selected collections.

In this way, media scientists will get new means to conduct research in this area. For example, media scientists could use textual queries to search for specific scene motifs and camera settings, or they could use image examples to search for similar content in the selected collections.
