Knowledge Engineering & Bioinformatics

The research focus of the Knowledge Engineering & Bioinformatics (KEBI) Lab is on methodical foundations of knowledge engineering and computational intelligence, especially in the fields of machine learning and data mining as well as uncertainty and (fuzzy set-based) approximate reasoning. Our vision and ambition is to develop methods that are both theoretically well-founded and effectively applicable, thereby bridging the gap between theoretical foundations and practical applications.

Application-oriented research in the field of bioinformatics constitutes another main focus. Here, the goal is to utilize knowledge engineering methods as tools for supporting biological research, especially in data-intense fields such as molecular biology. As problems in bioinformatics often involve special requirements and new demands, foundational, methodical, and application-oriented research are mutually beneficial and cross-fertilize each other.
