The Institute of Pathology at the Philipps-Universität Marburg and at the University Hospital Gießen and Marburg, Marburg site fulfills a diverse range of tasks in the areas of patient care, quality assurance, teaching and research.

Diagnostic evaluation of tissues (histology) from surgical and non-surgical medical subjects is an essential part of patient care. Surgical specimens, biopsies and aspiration as well as smear cytology (cell preparations) are examined and evaluated. As an important part of therapeutic planning, this is done in close cooperation with the respective clinics. Another important focus is the performance of clinical autopsies for further clarification of the disease process and the cause of death.

Within the scope of further training and quality assurance, clinical-pathological conferences are conducted by the Institute. Clinical cases are presented and discussed from a pathological point of view with the interdisciplinary participation of various departments.
