Safety information

Please ensure that the security certificate specified in the instructions is both properly installed on your operating system and properly stored in the profile of your WiFi connection. Otherwise there are serious security risks!

  • Entry requirements

    - You have the login credentials for your university account (Staff or Students).

    - Operating system: Linux should be up to date, i.e. all updates should be installed.

    - Drivers: You should ensure that the latest drivers for the WiFi adapter are installed. 
    Modern Linux distributions usually install the required WiFi drivers automatically, provided that freely available drivers exist for the WiFi adapter. A list of existing Linux WiFi drivers can be found at: https://wireless.wiki.kernel.org/en/users/Drivers

    - IP and DNS settings: You do not need to change the IP (Internet Protocol) and DNS (Domain Name System) settings for your WiFi connection, the default settings for all modern operating systems (automatic IP via DHCP, automatic DNS server) are suitable.

    - Supplicant for IEEE 802.1X registration: The wpa_supplicant program is already pre-installed in most Linux distributions. If it is missing, it can be installed via the software or package manager of the Linux distribution. Under RedHat, Fedora and SuSE the package is called wpa_supplicant, under Debian and Ubuntu it is called wpasupplicant. The EAP-TTLS-PAP or EAP-PEAP-MSCHAPv2 authentication methods used in UMRnet are supported by default.

    - Root certificate: The T-Telesec Global Root Class 2 certificate or the file "/etc/ssl/certs/T-TeleSec_GlobalRoot_Class_2.pem" must be available. 
    Most modern distributions already include the certificate (see root certificate).

  • Troubleshooting

    The following overview offers simple solutions for possible problems when using the WiFi networks of the Philipps-Universität Marburg. If the solutions listed do not help, please send an e-mail to .

    Problem Possible causes and solutions
    The SSID eduroam is not listed.
    • Your computer's WiFi adapter is deactivated. Activate the WiFi adapter via an external switch on your computer and/or via the function keys on your computer's keyboard and/or via the network settings of your operating system.
    • You are not in the WiFi reception area of the Philipps-Universität Marburg. You can find an overview of the WiFi  hotspots available at the university in the following list: WiFi hotspots (Uni-Internal/GER)
    No network connection can be established after logging in.
    • Username and/or password are incorrect. Please check your entries and try logging in again.
      Please enter your full username (e.g. Username@students.uni-marburg.de or username@staff.uni-marburg.de). You can check your password on the following website:
      https://admin.students.uni-marburg.de/info_user.html
    • The settings for the WiFi network and/or WiFi authentication are not correct. Make sure that the settings are correct.
    • Network management software may be interfering with authentication. Completely uninstall the relevant network management software, restart the computer, check the authentication settings and try logging in again.
    • A firewall may be interfering with authentication. If it is an additional personal firewall or Internet security software in addition to the operating system firewall, uninstall the relevant firewalls completely, restart the computer, check the authentication settings and try logging in again.
    After logging in, a network connection can only sometimes be established.
    • Your device keeps trying to log on to the WiFi with PEAP without success. The username is correct, but the password is incorrect.
      If the PEAP login fails regularly, the account is blocked for approx. 30 minutes. Once the block has expired, logging in is possible again for a short time until it is blocked again.
      Make sure that the correct username and password are stored on all devices and in all associated settings profiles for secure WiFi and LAN access. Once the block has expired, the Internet connection should work again.
